Description

This pure, wild bees honey is sourced from the forests of Mahiyanganaya and harvested by the Veddas of Dabana, an indigenous tribe of Sri Lanka. The indigenous Vedda community of Sri Lanka have always used wild bees honey in their traditions and culture, for medicinal purposes and to flavour and preserve food from ancient time.
Bees build hives in termite homes, tree trunks and rock crevices in the forest and fill their hives with pollen during flowering season. At the beginning of the rainy season, the bees breed in their colonies, and lay their eggs in the hive. Soon the larvae hatch and they join the rest of the colony.
The skilled Veddas identify a large hive and gently blow into it. Sensing the heat this action generates, the bees move to a different part of the hive, after which the desired section is carefully cut off to be used by the community.
The Veddas have inhabited our forests for hundreds of years and coexist perfectly with all living things, including the bees, by ensuring that the honey extraction process does no harm to the insects.
